Temperature Unit:
Heat Color Reference Chart
Dark Red (Blood Red)
~500°C
Lowest visible forging heat. Suitable only for light bending of thin material.
Dark Cherry Red
~600°C
Beginning of useful forging range for thin sections. Not hot enough for heavy work.
Cherry Red
~700°C
Suitable for bending and light forging of small stock. Mild steel is workable.
Bright Cherry Red
~800°C
Good forging temperature for most mild steel work. Ideal for general blacksmithing.
Orange
~900°C
Excellent for heavy forging, drawing out, and upsetting. Most steels are very workable.
Bright Orange
~950°C
Ideal for forge welding mild steel. High workability for all operations.
Yellow
~1000°C
Near upper limit for carbon steels. Excellent for forge welding. Watch for burning.
Yellow-White
~1100°C
Only for pure iron or very low carbon steel. Most steels will burn or spark at this temperature.
White
~1200°C
DANGER: Most steels are burning at this temperature. Only wrought iron can survive.

How to Use This Guide
- Set your preferred temperature unit (Celsius or Fahrenheit) using the toggle at the top.
- Refer to the Heat Color Reference Chart to learn what color steel should be at each temperature range.
- Use the Temperature Lookup to enter a specific temperature and see the expected color and which metals are in their ideal forging range.
- Select your metal type to see its recommended forging temperature range and important notes.
- Always use proper PPE: safety glasses, leather apron, heat-resistant gloves, and face shield for forge welding.
- Remember: aluminum does NOT change color when heated — always use a temperature indicator or infrared thermometer.
