Pottery Wheel Speed Guide
Recommended RPM ranges and tips by form type
Small Bowls (6" or less)
Soft clay works well. Center quickly at higher speed.
Large Bowls (8"+)
Firmer clay recommended. Slow down for wide rims.
Cylinders / Cups
Even wall thickness is key. Steady medium speed.
Plates / Platters
Very slow speed for wide forms. Flatten carefully.
Bottles / Narrow Forms
Collar slowly. Use ribs inside for even walls.
Mugs
Stoneware or porcelain. Pull handle separately.
Vases
Support the walls as you go taller. Steady speed.
Teapots
Throw body, lid, spout separately. Consistent speed.
General Tips
- • Start faster for centering, slow down for pulling and shaping
- • Wetter/softer clay requires slower speeds to avoid collapsing
- • Larger forms need slower speeds to maintain control
- • Porcelain benefits from slightly slower speeds than stoneware
- • Always ensure clay is well-centered before reducing speed
