Wood Thickness Planer

Calculate planing passes and material removal

Planing Tips

Cut depth: 1/32" per pass maximum for clean results
Snipe: Board ends may have 1-2" of extra material removal. Cut boards 1-2" long
Grain direction: Feed board so knives cut with the grain, not against
Minimum length: 12" for safety; shorter pieces are dangerous
Final pass: Take a very light cut (1/64") on the last pass for best finish

The Wood Thickness Planer Guide teaches proper operation and settings for thickness planers. Learn to achieve uniform wood thickness, avoid tearout, and maintain your equipment.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Why is planing depth important?

Shallow cuts reduce tearout risk. Removing too much material at once causes planer strain and poor results.

What is grain direction and why matters?

Grain direction affects tearout risk. Planing with the grain produces smoother results than against the grain.

How often should planer knives be sharpened?

Sharpen or replace blades when you notice quality decline, typically every 4-8 hours of use depending on wood type.

What causes snipe in planing?

Snipe (dips at ends) happens when the planer does not support the wood evenly at beginning and end of pass.
