Plastics recyclability depends heavily on the resin identification code (1–7) and your local facility. Always check local rules.

Preparation steps

  • Rinse out food and liquids
  • Remove and discard plastic caps/lids unless your program accepts them
  • Leave labels on, but remove plastic film
  • Do not bag recyclables in plastic bags — keep them loose

Plastic Resin Codes (1–7)

Look for the number inside the ♻️ triangle on the bottom of the item.

♻️ 1PET / PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate)Widely Recycled
Examples: Water & soda bottles, food jars
The most recycled plastic. Don't reuse for heat.
♻️ 2HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)Widely Recycled
Examples: Milk jugs, detergent bottles, shampoo
Sturdy and widely accepted.
♻️ 3PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)Rarely Recycled
Examples: Pipes, vinyl, some clamshells
Contains chlorine; rarely accepted.
♻️ 4LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)Limited
Examples: Plastic bags, shrink wrap, squeeze bottles
Film plastics — store drop-off only.
♻️ 5PP (Polypropylene)Limited
Examples: Yogurt tubs, bottle caps, straws
Acceptance is growing; check locally.
♻️ 6PS (Polystyrene)Rarely Recycled
Examples: Styrofoam cups, take-out containers
Foam breaks up and contaminates streams.
♻️ 7Other (mixed/polycarbonate)Rarely Recycled
Examples: Sunglasses, large water jugs, mixed plastics
Catch-all category; not recyclable.
