Bee Population Estimator

Estimate bee population with this free online tool

Bee Population Estimator

Estimate colony size from covered frame sides. Calculate bee count, brood area, forager/house bee split, and colony strength rating with seasonal comparison.

Both sides of each covered frame

Frames with eggs/larvae/capped brood

2,500 bees/side, 7,000 brood cells/frame

How to Use

  1. During inspection, count the number of frame sides fully covered by bees (both sides of each frame).
  2. Count frames containing eggs, larvae, or capped brood.
  3. Select your frame size (deep, medium, or shallow).
  4. Click Estimate Population to calculate colony size and strength rating.

Standard estimates: ~2,500 bees per deep frame side, ~1,800 per medium, ~1,200 per shallow. These are approximations — actual density varies with bee size, clustering behavior, and season. A healthy peak-season colony has 50,000-80,000 bees.

All calculations are performed locally in your browser. No colony data is sent to any server. Your beekeeping records stay private.
