Vintage Radio Alignment Guide

IF and RF alignment procedures for tube radios

Safety Warning: Tube radios contain lethal voltages (200-300V+). Always use an isolation transformer. Discharge capacitors before servicing. Never work on a powered chassis with both hands.

Standard IF Frequency

455 kHz

Standard AM IF frequency used in virtually all AM tube radios

Step 1: IF Alignment

  1. 1Set signal generator to 455 kHz, 30% modulation at 400 Hz
  2. 2Connect generator output through a 0.01μF capacitor to the converter grid
  3. 3Connect VTVM or oscilloscope to detector output (across volume control)
  4. 4Keep generator output as low as possible for usable meter reading
  5. 5Adjust last IF transformer slug for maximum output reading
  6. 6Adjust preceding IF transformer slugs in sequence, working toward the front end
  7. 7Repeat all adjustments 2-3 times for best accuracy (transformers interact)
  8. 8If meter reading goes off scale, reduce generator output, do not change meter range

Step 2: RF / Oscillator Alignment (High End)

  1. 1Set signal generator to 1400 kHz, 30% modulation
  2. 2Set radio tuning capacitor to 1400 kHz on dial
  3. 3Connect generator through radiation loop or loosely coupled wire
  4. 4Adjust oscillator trimmer capacitor for maximum output
  5. 5Adjust antenna trimmer capacitor for maximum output
  6. 6Check dial calibration accuracy at this frequency

Step 3: Tracking Adjustment (Low End)

  1. 1Set signal generator to 600 kHz, 30% modulation
  2. 2Set radio tuning to 600 kHz on dial
  3. 3Adjust oscillator padder capacitor (series trimmer) for maximum output
  4. 4Rock tuning capacitor slightly back and forth while adjusting for peak
  5. 5Recheck 1400 kHz alignment (may need iteration)
  6. 6Verify tracking at 1000 kHz — should be close without adjustment

Required Equipment

Signal GeneratorProvides calibrated RF test signals at alignment frequencies
VTVM or OscilloscopeMeasures output level for peak detection during alignment
Alignment ToolNon-metallic hex or blade tool for adjusting IF slugs and trimmers
0.01μF Coupling CapacitorIsolates signal generator from tube grid DC voltage
Isolation TransformerSafety — isolates radio chassis from AC mains
Dummy AntennaSimulates proper antenna impedance for RF alignment

Alignment Tips

  • Always perform IF alignment before RF alignment
  • Use the weakest usable signal from your generator
  • IF transformers interact — repeat adjustments 2-3 times
  • Never use a metal screwdriver near live circuits
  • Mark trimmer positions before adjusting so you can return to starting point
  • For FM, a sweep generator gives the best visual alignment results
