Yarn Twist Direction Guide

Understand S-twist vs Z-twist, how twist direction affects your knitting, and which to use for your project.

S-Twist

Rotation: Clockwise when viewed from above

Effect: Fibers spiral like the center stroke of "S" — clockwise twist

Bias: Stockinette knit in S-twist yarn tends to bias to the LEFT

Best for: Standard commercial yarns, most handspinning, balanced singles

Z-Twist

Rotation: Counterclockwise when viewed from above

Effect: Fibers spiral like the center stroke of "Z" — counterclockwise twist

Bias: Stockinette knit in Z-twist yarn tends to bias to the RIGHT

Best for: Some traditional spinning, balanced plying with S-twist singles

Bias in Stockinette

When you knit stockinette with energized (unbalanced) yarn, the fabric biases diagonally. The direction depends on the twist direction of the yarn.

S-twist yarn → Left bias

Stockinette fabric spirals counterclockwise

Z-twist yarn → Right bias

Stockinette fabric spirals clockwise
