What is Grain Direction?
- Paper grain direction refers to the alignment of fibers in a sheet of paper.
- During manufacturing, paper fibers align predominantly in one direction — the direction the paper machine moves.
- The grain direction is called "grain long" when fibers run parallel to the longer dimension, or "grain short" when parallel to the shorter dimension.
- Most standard sheets (letter, A4) are grain long — fibers run parallel to the 11" (297mm) side.
