Press dimples (ball peen or press die) into surface, then forge flat.

Choose how many times you plan to fold and weld the billet.

Review the recommended patterns that work best with your resulting layer count.
More layers produce finer patterns but require more welding passes — balance quality with practical limits.

Tip: Most bladesmiths use 4–8 folds (16–512 layers from a 2-layer billet). Beyond 10 folds, individual layers become extremely thin and may homogenize during welding.
